3. (79) Mike Walker, WR

It will be interesting to see how Mike Walker fits into the Jaguars plans.  He was a productive player in college but he seems to have some things that might limit him in the NFL.  Walker is 6′1″, 198 pounds but he’s slow (4.55 40) and he’s had some serious injury issues as he tore his left ACL in 2005 and was limping all season long for Central Florida.  The amazing thing about that is that he still caught 90 passes for 1,178 yards (13.1 avg) with 7 TDs despite not being 100%.  In 46 games (32 starts) at Central Florida, Walker caught 184 passes for 2,561 yards (13.9 avg) with 17 TDs.  Walker is a tough guy, but many projected him to be drafted in the 6th or 7th round so the Jags took him way too early.

2. (48) James Durant, LB

Durant was a major reach for the Jaguars in the 2nd round.  Many experts had him going in the 4th or 5th round of the draft.  Durant is 6′0″, 229 and he runs a 4.6 40 yard dash so he has the physical tools to succeed in the NFL, but he played at Hampton and it will be a huge leap for him in competition.  In 42 games (34 starts) at Hampton, Durant made 353 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, had 12 sacks, broke up 16 passes and intercepted 4 passes.  Durant played middle linebacker in college but he will likely slide outside for the Jaguars.  He has the skill set needed to succeed in the Pros but he will need to get a little tougher as he some times runs around blockers instead of engaging and shedding.  He was a reach for the Jaguars this early in the Draft.

1. (21) Reggie Nelson, S

The Jacksonville Jaguars really needed a legit WR for their offense and a lot of good ones were available at this pick but they decided to select safety Reggie Nelson instead.  Nelson is a good football player and he will make the Jags defense even more physical than they already are if that is possible.  Nelson is 6′0″, 198 pounds and he’s really fast as he runs a 40 in 4.4 seconds.  Nelson played in only 25 games at Florida (18 starts) and he made 97 tackles, broke up 6 passes, had 7 interceptions (76 return yards), forced 1 fumble and recovered 1 fumble.  Nelson also helps out on special teams as he blocked 2 kicks last season for the National Champion Gators.  Nelson will make the defense even better for the Jaguars and he was a good pick at this point in the first round.

The Jacksonville Jaguars release CB Ahmad Carroll

Ahmad Carroll was arrested on felony drug and weapons charges over the weekend and the Jaguars decided that they have had enough of him and cut him from the team.  Carroll played in 5 games last season for the Jags and he made 11 tackles, had 1 sack and defensed 3 passes.  The Jags would have liked to keep him for depth reasons, but he’s not worth the headache.

The Jacksonville Jaguars release punter Jason Hanson

When the Jaguars traded up to select punter Adam Podlesh from Maryland you could see the handwriting on the wall concerning the future of Jason Hanson with the Jags.  Hanson punted in all 16 games last season for the Jaguars and he kicked the ball 72 times for 2,920 yards (40.6 avg) with a net of only 33.4 yards per punt and that is not acceptable.
